June 6 2020 - A second migrant farm worker in Windsor/Essex County — and the youngest person to succumb locally to the coronavirus — has died due to COVID-19.
The 24-year-old man died Friday at Windsor Regional Hospital after first going to Erie Shores Healthcare on June 1, from a hotel where he had been self-isolating, according to a weekend statement from Windsor Regional Hospital.
The hospital has contacted the deceased’s family in Mexico.
On Monday, Medical Officer of Health Dr. Wajid Ahmed said the man tested positive for COVID-19 early in May after seeking medical treatment for a “significant” underlying medical condition. He was hospitalized and recovered.
More than two weeks later — after the virus’s 14-day incubation period, and after the health unit considered his case resolved — the man again developed symptoms and sought help from health-care providers.
“His significant underlying health condition was a concern on its own,” Ahmed said. “Having a diagnosis of COVID — a combination of those two could have led to (his death), but it’s hard to say which caused what.”
